Donegal County Council and Donegal Youth Council will host a 3-day visit from a Norwegian delegation from the region of Nordland beginning this Thursday. The group, which includes the Mayor of the Nordland region, Ms Sonja Steen, are keen to undertake a study visit to Donegal to learn about youth participation models and other mental health initiatives and youth projects. 

 

The Nordland group are a member of the Assembly of European Regions (AER),  of which Donegal County Council are another partner, and became aware of the work ongoing here when Donegal Youth Council were awarded the MYFER Special Prize (Most Youth Friendly European Region) last year for their SPARKS Youth Mental Health roadshow. Members of the Donegal Youth Council will present the project to the group, as well as talk with them about other youth council activities and projects.

 

Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council , Cllr. John Campbell, will welcome the group to Donegal and will play host for the duration of the group’s visit, which includes other Nordland politicians and 2 members of the Nordland Youth Council. As well as meeting with the Donegal Youth Council they will also visit a number of other youth projects in the county, including Donegal Youth Service, Jigsaw, The Yard in Falcarragh and Magheroarty Family Resource Centre.

 

Donegal Youth Council is funded by Donegal County Council, HSE Health Promotion and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and aims to provide young people with opportunities to identify, prioritise and work on topics and projects which have been identified by the wider youth population of the county and also to provide young people with opportunities to have their voice heard by being involved in the development of local services and policies which affect them.
